Story of Mata Laxmi and Samudra Manthan

Do You Know?

Mata Laxmi who is worshipped on this auspicious Day of Laxmi Pooja was born during Samudra Manthan and adopted by Samudra.

According to Scriptures and Puranas, Once Lord Indra the king of Devas insulted Sage Durvasa. Enraged, Sage gave him curse to lose Shri that is Laxmi. Devas went to Lord Vishnu for the solution. Lord Vishnu advised them to start Samudra Manthan with help of Asuras. Samudra Manthan was a Yagna which was to be performed by churning the ocean to grind and take out precious and divine things along with Laxmi.

Due to greed of Amrit, Asuras agreed. Mount Mandar was to be used as Churner and Naag Vasuki to be used as Churning cable. They needed the base to keep Mount Mandar afloat. So Lord Vishnu incarnated as Kachhapa. When Churning started First Halahal Vish appeared which Lord Shiva drank and held at his throat. Thus called Neelkanth.

Then Divine Cow Kaamdhenu, Divine Horse Ucchaishrava, Divine elephant  Airavat, God Dhanvantri with Amrit kalash and other 14 type of Divine Gems appeared.

Then Laxmi Appeared from the Manthan. Sindhuraaj gave her Divya Vastra, Indra gave her Asan to sit and Vishwakarma gave her garland.

Laxmi started looking for Vishnu and chose him as his husband as soon as she saw him. Ocean or Sindhu performed the rituals of Kanyadaan for her.

Jai Mata Laxmi
